GermanWings

The flight: germanwings flight 4U2377 departing from London Stansted at 08.00 and flying to Stuttgart. The flight was operated by an Airbus A319.

The check-in: Being 6.30am it took just a couple of minutes for my bag to be weighed and boarding pass issued by a friendly and efficient member of staff. I was also notified – and apologised to – of an hour’s delay due to bad weather. An online check-in option is also available at www.germanwings.com.

The Seat: A one class-only, no-frills cabin with seat pitches varying around 30 inches and a width of 18 inches. There's no onboard entertainment other than the in-flight magazine which didn't occupy me for very long!

The Service: As you'd expect of a no-frills budget airline there was no complimentary meal or drinks, but the menu that was handed out featured some reasonably priced options. A meal deal featuring a choice of drinks and sandwiches came in at under five euros, while a beer was priced at a very impressive two euros – it was a little early to take advantage of that though!

The arrival:
After a smooth landing, the transfer between the aircraft and Stuttgart Airport’s Terminal Two was completed swiftly by bus. After a short queue at passport control it was less than a five minute wait before being reunited with my luggage at the carousel.

The verdict: A good budget flight option for either business or pleasure, without compromising too much on service. If you were going somewhere further afield with a connection, schedule in a meal at the airport and take a good book.

The details: germanwings’ home hub is Cologne-Bonn Airport. From London Stansted it flies direct to Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart. It also flies from Edinburgh, Dublin and, as of October, from Manchester too. Single fares start at €19.99 (around £17) including taxes – baggage is extra. A FlexPlus option allows customers to select a seat free of charge when booking, includes checked baggage and allows free changes to travel dates. www.germanwings.com
