The flight: EK016 London Gatwick to Dubai, flying in a Business Class cabin comprised of 24 seats in 2x2x2 configuration.
The check-in: No queue at the Business or, indeed, the First Class check-in desk. Check-in was swift, I was given an invitation to the lounge and a fast-track pass through security.
The lounge: The Emirates lounge in the North Terminal is vast. There was ample seating – sofas, single seat chairs or at dining tables. Lunch was being served as I arrived, with a choice of six main courses, salads, fruits and cheeses. The lounge had plenty of reading material, two TVs, a quiet area, numerous work stations and toilets with showers. Free wifi access was also available.
The boarding process: The lounge was located about a ten minute walk from the gate. An announcement was made in the lounge for us to proceed to the aircraft and on arrival at the gate we were quickly through the seating area and onto the aircraft.
The seat: The seat was wide and comfortable and offered a range of positions for one to relax during the flight. The ICE in-flight entertainment system was one of the best I have experienced, with a wide range of movies, TV shows, music, games and general information. Passengers can also use the system to send texts to mobile phones directly from their seat at a cost of US$1 per message. You can also access Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo! and some other internet e-mail accounts using the system.
The service: Before take-off we were offered a choice of Champagne, orange juice, water or apple juice, as well as a selection of both UK and Arabic newspapers. After take-off we were offered hot towels, a menu, wine list and drink. The lunch menu consisted of a choice of two appetisers, a salad, four main courses, two desserts, cheeses and fruit. Later in the flight we were offered a selection of sandwiches, pastries and drinks.
The arrival: Arrived on schedule and were quickly off the plane. It was only a short walk to passport control and baggage reclaim where the luggage was soon delivered.
The verdict: As one would expect, the whole experience was both enjoyable and relaxing. Having lunch freshly served in the lounge was a nice touch and the staff on the ground and in the air were attentive. With so much on offer from the in-flight entertainment system, time in the air passed very quickly.
